Drug Free Community (DFC)
Action Plan for creating a drug-free community to prevent substance use among Ute Mountain Ute Tribe youth.
Our goals, by September 29, 2027, are to increase the number of partners in the Drug Free Coalition by 15% (to be measured by attendance rosters), reduce by 10% use of alcohol within 30 days among youth Grades 6-12 (to be measured by pre- post-Past 30-Day Use surveys), and reduce current use by 10% of methamphetamine within 30 days among youth Grades 6-12 (to be measured by pre- post-Past 30-Day Use surveys).
Local Strategies To Achieve Our Goals
Mógúán’s Growing Healthy Ute DFC program is aimed at mobilizing community leaders to identify and respond to the drug problems unique to the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe community and change local community environmental conditions tied to substance use. The UMUT drug-free community prioritizes the health and well-being of our members. Our goal is to increase participation in the mission of the Drug Free Coalition, expand the knowledge of community partners, promote drug-free lifestyles, and empower individuals to make positive choices. By leveraging our coalition and community strength, we work collaboratively to address the challenges posed by substance use, aiming to create a safe and supportive atmosphere for future generations.
Building youth resiliency through drug-free community coalitions is essential for creating a supportive network that encourages young individuals to thrive without the influence of substances. Together, communities can work towards a healthier future for their youth.
An Essential Need
A drug-free community is essential for cultivating a safe and healthy environment where our youth can thrive. The presence of drugs often leads to increased crime rates, health issues, and a breakdown in social structures. By encouraging a drug-free lifestyle, we can enhance overall well-being, reduce the burden on our community, and promote stronger relationships among our people. Moreover, a drug-free culture supports the development of Ute Mountain youth, allowing them to pursue education and opportunities without the detrimental influence of substance abuse. Ultimately, prioritizing a drug-free community is vital for ensuring a stable and prosperous future for all of us.
Survivors Support Group
A survivors support group is vitally important for those who have experienced trauma. They provide a safe space for sharing and offer crucial emotional, informational, and practical support for trauma recovery. Key aspects include:
Emotional Support: Members share feelings without judgment, fostering belonging.
Shared Experiences: Recognizing they are not alone helps healing and validates emotions.
Coping Strategies: Groups offer tools for managing anxiety and depression.
Resource Sharing: Information on therapy, legal aid, and medical support is shared.
Empowerment: Sharing stories inspires hope and reinforces strength.
Community Building: Relationships formed extend beyond meetings.
Growing Healthy Ute DFC Coalition
The Growing Healthy Ute DFC Coalition will drive a community conversation about the danger and prevention strategies for alcohol and methamphetamine and modify existing policies to embrace a restorative justice philosophy related to youth substance use, strengthened by referral networks.

Youth Resiliency Programming
Our youth resiliency programming focuses on equipping young people with the skills and resources they need to effectively navigate challenges and setbacks in their lives. These programs aim to build emotional strength, adaptability, and problem-solving skills, ultimately enhancing the overall well-being of youth. One of several key components is community engagement -involving youth in community service or civic activities can enhance their sense of agency and responsibility. These experiences can be powerful in teaching resilience through real-world applications.
